ADELOS Phase II

ancient technologies • traditional techniques • modern infrastructure in the farmhouse of Markos

Boulouki continues a participatory restoration project of a vernacular farmstead on Delos, undertaken in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades and the French School at Athens. The main goal of the project is the restoration of one of the surviving traditional farmsteads on Delos, known as “Markos’ village,” using traditional materials and techniques, so that it can be used as new accommodation for researchers, scholars, and conservators working on the island’s archaeological site. The construction work is accompanied by interdisciplinary research on the relationships between ancient and traditional forms of material knowledge and sustainable landscape management practices.

Focusing on this project, Boulouki seeks to deepen its engagement with the rural vernacular heritage of the island cluster of Mykonos-Delos-Rineia, emphasizing the multidimensional yet often invisible or overlooked relationships between ancient and traditional building practices and the management of the landscape and its available natural resources. The on-site ethnographic research, conducted in collaboration with anthropologist Despina Nazou, is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and the Cycladic Identity program of the Museum of Cycladic Art.

The restoration work on the structures of the farmstead begins with a six-day educational workshop, during which a group of students from the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich will visit Delos and the restoration site of Markos’ farmstead. They will study the modern-era farmstead buildings of the island up close, speak with people who have lived or grown up on Delos and Rineia, and be invited to propose design solutions for the adaptive reuse of the newer cells’ shells, taking into account the island’s specific operational framework and infrastructural needs.

Boulouki organizes the “ADELOS” project in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades and the French School of Athens. The J.M. Kaplan Fund is the primary funder of the project. The project aims to restore the traditional “Farmhouse of Markos” in Delos and study the rural heritage of the Delos, Mykonos, and Rineia island complex. Ethnographic research activities are carried out in collaboration with the anthropologist Despina Nazou and funded by the Initiative for Public Humanities of Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNFPHI) at Columbia University and the Museum of Cycladic Art Initiative, Cycladic Identity. The project is the main focus of the Boulouki Design Studio Department of Architecture (D-ARCH) at ETH Zurich.
