Summer School in Tzoumerka
Festive workshop on traditional and sustainable building

We are delighted to announce the launch of the “Tzoumerka Summer School 2026,” an festive hands-on workshop that serves as the culmination of our multi-year work at the School in Frasta. The workshop focuses on the three main subjects we have worked on at the School in recent years: stone, wood, and mortars. With the completion of the works, the School of Research and Education for Traditional and Sustainable Building in Frasta, Tzoumerka, officially begins its operation as a permanent educational structure.
The festive workshop will be guided by local craftspeople with local expertise, as well as specialized instructors from Ireland, Croatia, and the Boulouki team. This year, for the first time, craftswomen and craftsmen who have trained in previous workshops will participate as lead instructors. The 40 participants will have the opportunity to get involved in theory and practice, actively contributing to the completion of the exemplary restoration of the building and its surrounding area. The program is divided into three weekly thematic units:
- June 15-19, Stone: A week dedicated to stone construction, in collaboration with groups from Ireland (DSWAI) and Croatia (Dragodid), within the framework of the ECHOES* project of the “Creative Europe” program.
- June 22-26, Timber: Focus on carpentry structures, stairs, lofts, and traditional techniques such as tsatmas (timber framing).
- June 29-July 4, Mortars: Emphasis on lime and clay plasters, limewash, as well as masonry pointing works.
Co-organization and Synergies
The Summer School is organized by Boulouki, in co-organization with the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka, the Municipality of Northern Tzoumerka, the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) – Epirus Section, and the Regional Association of Municipalities of Epirus (PED Epirus). The project is supported by the Kokkalis Foundation, the Sachinis Family, the Technical Chamber of Greece, and AEGEAS NGO. The Oikos Dalkafouki supports former trainees and participants who are now teaching as instructors/craftspeople for the workshop.
*The “Enhancing Cultural Heritage Skills Across Europe” project, led by partners from Croatia (DRAGODID), Greece (Boulouki), and Ireland (Dry Stone Wall Association of Ireland – DSWAI), is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and showcasing European cultural diversity and heritage. The project is co-funded by the European Union, “Creative Europe” program, “European Cooperation Projects” action.
Community Activities
Throughout the workshop, the program includes open activities for everyone:
- Open Lectures: Every Monday, Thursday, and Friday (18:00 – 20:00) at the Frasta School: open lectures, screenings, discussions, and presentations by participants.
- Collective Walks & Kafeneio Gatherings: Every Saturday (June 20, June 27, July 4, at 09:30 and 20:00) in Frasta.
- Open Days on the Construction Site: Group visits are organized upon arrangement.
