“The masons’ legacy as an opportunity to address contemporary challenges”
In the framework of the official satellite event of the New European Bauhaus Festival 2026 on Friday, June 12, at the “Dimitris Chatzis” Cultural Space, we had the joy of joining our voice with distinguished experts and academics in the discussion: “Cultural heritage and local materials: The masons’ legacy as an opportunity to address contemporary challenges”.
With great joy and honor, we participated in the panel “Architecture and Materiality – Cultural heritage and local materials: The masons’ legacy as an opportunity to address contemporary challenges” with fellow speakers Mr. Georgios Smyris (former Associate Professor, Department of Architecture, Polytechnic School, University of Ioannina) and Ms. Katerina Delegou (Associate Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Ioannina), moderated by Ms. Amalia Androulidaki (General Director of the Directorate of Restoration, Museums and Technical Works of the Ministry of Culture. National Contact Point for the New European Bauhaus in Greece).
At the center of our discussion was what constitutes the core of the work at Boulouki: how traditional knowledge, collective memory, and the use of local natural materials can provide sustainable, ecological answers to the contemporary challenges of the climate crisis.
“We are talking about a wealth of materials and knowledge… We need to see which frameworks we can use to discuss the utilization of local resources, the protection of cultural heritage, and the transition to more sustainable construction through this holistic prism of sustainability, economic, environmental, and social. That is, how can smaller units function again, which can feed and protect cultural landscapes and smaller settlements.”
