Boulouki presents findings from its ongoing research into the invisible rural heritage of Delos through a three-day event that includes a Zine Workshop, an open event, and an experiential field activity.
In collaboration with social anthropologist Despina Nazou, the group’s research brings to light a distinct cultural identity that emerged from the coexistence of rural life and archaeology on the island of Delos from the late 19th to the late 20th century. Supported by the Cycladic Identity initiative of the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative (SNFPHI), the research was developed along two aspects:
• The ethnography of an “invisible” community explored the daily lives of people and families who lived and worked on the island as farmers, workers, and archaeological guards over the last fifty years, forming a unique community of “Delians.”
• Folk archaeologies on Delos focused on the practices and perceptions through which Mykonian farmers approached ancient ruins while working as excavation workers on Delos throughout the 20th century.
The three-day event will unfold as follows:
On Friday, June 19, participants of the Municipality of Mykonos Art Program, together with Delians, will create an informal collective publication (zine) that tells the story of the “Farmhouse of Markos” , the last farmer to live on Delos. The workshop is supported by the SNFPHI (Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative).
On Saturday, June 20, an open event will take place at the Municipal Event Hall in Mykonos at Matogianni at 7:00 PM, presenting the Anthology of Narratives from ethnographic research, based on the stories of five people who entrusted us with their memories. Finally, on Sunday, June 21, those who participated in the group’s ethnographic research will meet on Delos at the Farmhouse of Markos to share memories and experiences “on-site.” The Cycladic Identity initiative of the Museum of Cycladic Art supports both of these events.
The project “ADELOS” is organized by Boulouki in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades and the French School of Athens. The main supporter of the project is The J.M. Kaplan Fund. The project aims to restore the vernacular buildings “Farmhouse of Markos” in Delos and to study the agricultural heritage of the island complex of Delos, Mykonos, and Rheneia. The ethnographic research activities are conducted in collaboration with the anthropologist Despina Nazou and are supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation through the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Public Humanities Initiative programme and the Museum of Cycladic Art initiative, Cycladic Identity.
