The first phase of the Citizen Science action was carried out as part of the CONSERVE CONNECT project, combining field trips to the villages of Kastaniani, Kerasovo, Vourbiani, and Pournia. During these field trips, with the participation of local communities, we explored and recorded Non-Wood Forest Products (products of biological origin other than wood, such as seeds, fruits, mushrooms, roots, leaves, stems, bulbs, and medicinal parts of forest trees and shrubs) that we encountered on hiking trails around these settlements.
We listened to stories related to the historical use of the natural landscape for cultivation and grazing, and observed the remnants of the agricultural architectural heritage. At present, the coexistence of threshing floors, barns, huts, wood ovens, fountains, chapels, bridges, and paths with the surrounding forest areas creates new opportunities for local communities. Through Citizen Science, we document traditional ecological knowledge and envision the re-habituation and sustainable use of natural spaces!

The actions were carried out as part of the CONSERVE CONNECT project with the support of the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust – PONT, which funds actions that enhance the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services in Albania, North Macedonia, and Greece, promoting cooperation between citizens, scientists, and organizations.
