NEB ceremony 4

New European Bauhaus Award for the “Frasta School” project

Municipality of Central Tzoumerka & Boulouki | “Boost for Small Municipalities”

On September 30, 2025, in Brussels, the winners of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) Awards and the NEB Boost for Small Municipalities initiative—supported by the European Parliament—were announced.

Among the 20 award-winning municipalities across Europe was the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka, recognized for the project “Frasta School”, the only Greek project to be distinguished in this category. The project is being implemented in collaboration with Boulouki – Itinerant Workshop for Traditional Building Techniques.

The Boost for Small Municipalities initiative aims to empower small municipalities by providing them with the means to overcome financial barriers and to implement projects that are sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetically inspiring—aligned with the values of the New European Bauhaus.

The Frasta School project envisions the transformation of the former primary school in the village of Frasta into a multi-functional community hub, dedicated to sustainable building, research, and participatory education. The restoration of the building, which began in 2022, follows a participatory and educational approach that actively involves craftsmen, researchers, and the local community. Its completion is expected by the end of 2025.

The long-term vision for Frasta School is to establish a local ecosystem of collaboration, connecting national and international partners, and creating a space for encounter, learning, and research—where traditional knowledge meets contemporary practice.

This distinction marks a significant recognition of the innovative approach of the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka and Boulouki in linking cultural heritage with sustainable development, positioning Tzoumerka as an example of a small mountain community with a strong European footprint.
