Our participation in the 11th Interdisciplinary Conference of the Metsovion Interdisciplinary Research Center of the National Technical University of Athens, titled “Positions, Research and Actions for the Regeneration of Mountainous and Remote Areas”, was a true pleasure, as we had the opportunity to meet people who either live and work, or are professionally engaged, in the mountainous regions of Greece. The conference featured a rich program of sessions addressing topics such as planning and policy, tourism development and place identity, energy and environment, empowerment of mountain communities, water bodies and environmental pressures, culture, environmental monitoring, social entrepreneurship, and the management of common resources.
Our team’s presentation focused on the School in Frasta, Tzoumerka, and the ongoing initiative to transform it into a research and education center for traditional and sustainable construction. Through our presentation, we showcased the ongoing restoration and renovation of the school building, a process that already serves as a core educational activity in the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, strengthening the meaningful connection with local history, while exploring development strategies informed by the area’s unique cultural and geo-environmental characteristics. At the same time, the project fosters social cohesion through participatory building practices and collective care of shared resources.
We hope that, through the operation of the School with educational and vocational training programs, new job opportunities will be created, contributing to the attraction and retention of population in the mountainous municipalities of Central and Northern Tzoumerka. We warmly thank the scientific committee for the opportunity to present our project at this conference, which, for the past 30 years, has consistently served as a meeting point for scientists, institutional actors, and mountain communities, aiming to formulate well-founded positions and proposals for the revitalization of Greece’s mountainous and remote areas.
